The Pull Of The Stars.  By Emma Donoghue.

Just finished reading this brave startling and compelling book. Often more about the visceral miracle of childbirth, and the toll it takes on women’s bodies, as it is about the highly relevant flu epidemic in Dublin of 1918. You are immediately pulled into the story, told with her efficient clear writing. The characters are varied, fascinating, the voices authentic. We learn about the brutality of the mother and baby homes and the terrible attitude to pregnant women of the time. But all this is told tenderness and compassion and a great twisting story keeps you alongside Julia, Bridie & Doctor Lynn to the end.
